DOUGLAS MILES San Carlos Apache / Akimel-O'odham "I get most of my inspiration from my community, and I try to address the spirit of my community in my art."
Douglas Miles
Douglas Miles depicts warriors, be they traditional Apache figures or the youth of the San Carlos reservation in the high desert mountains of eastern Arizona. Whether audience or subject matter, the kids of San Carlos are the focus of Miles' work. To this end, he ventures beyond conventional drawing, painting or printmaking - Douglas Miles paints skateboards. His original decks are collectible works of art exhibited in galleries and museums the world over. Miles sponsors an all-Native skate team and screen prints boards for the kids to use. By sharing his artistic talents and creative insights with young people, Miles does more than create art, he serves as friend, mentor, and role model to generations of Native youth.
"I like giving the kids a sense of who they are and what they can do. I tell them their possibilities are endless, if they have the desire to learn, the talent will come." Douglas Miles |
