Sterling silver feather pendant with Arizona turquoise nugget, handmade by Harvey Chavez, Kewa Pueblo tribe, New Mexico, USA.
Pendant measures 34mm, chain length 46cm.
Harvey Chavez makes exquisite feather jewellery. Each feather is entirely handmade, skilfully formed from sterling silver, each unique in size, shape and detail. Every line is individually stamped using a homemade stamp and each feather is carefully shaped, polished and signed. As well as feather pendants Harvey and his wife Janie make feather bracelets rings, feather earrings, feather pendants, brooches, hair clips, bolo ties and necklaces.
Harvey Chavez also expertly handcrafts beads in the traditional way of his tribe. From tiny heishi beads to fine wafer cuts, every stone is expertly hand cut, drilled and polished from natural materials such as turquoise, coral, pipestone, black jet, serpentine or shell. This traditional skill is rapidly disappearing from the tribe.
Harvey Chavez is committed to practising the techniques learned from his parents, grandparents and great grandparents. He has passed these skills to his children and grandchildren in the hope that this knowledge will survive into future generations.
The Chavez family have been making beautiful jewellery for Rainmaker Gallery for twenty five years. We are deeply honoured to bring you the work of this talented family.
