Rainmaker Gallery is honoured to welcome back Mvskoke artist Rick Grimster with his latest solo show, GOLDEN YEARS. In this autumn exhibition, octogenarian Grimster presents his most recent paintings alongside works made in the creative surge that followed his remarkable gallery debut BELONGING, in 2023.

GOLDEN YEARS brings together pieces from three consecutive series of paintings that were sparked by the success of his first show and the symbiotic relationship between artist and gallery. In these works, Rick combines the layered organic forms and repeated symbols of his distinctive visual language, inviting the viewer to share in his life-affirming world of colour.

Grimster’s vibrant acrylic paintings are abstracted autobiographical landscapes that chart his shifting identity from adoptee to Indigenous elder. Rick Grimster is a citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. His birth father was a Native American GI based in England during World War II. Grimster attended Cheltenham School of Art in the 1960s and gained an MFA in 1970. An intensely private man, he continued to paint throughout his life without any intention of exhibiting his work until three years ago.
